Laundry Woes

As you can imagine, in a family of 7, there is a lot of laundry.
In our old house, I just did random laundry every day. I never sort, I just don't have the time.
Since we've moved, I've tried to change things up a bit.
I basically do laundry by room. This gives me 4 days of personal laundry, and 2 days to do sheets and other random laundry. I also do diapers twice a week.
It doesn't seem to be working out too well. I don't know why. Maybe because by the time I get to Collin and Zachy's room, they have a ton to do. And forget my room. That includes Emily's laundry, so that is an all day chore.
So my question is for those of you with large families. What is your routine like? What works for you? Is there a tried and true method that you would like to pass on to me. I'm up for anything to make this neverending chore a bit easier.

Hi Bekki,

I shoot for 4 loads per day - that amount maintains. Anything less, I fall behind, anything more is a bonus and catches me up a little. (At this point, I know I won't ever be caught up until I only have 2 or 3 children left at home!) Full loads for efficiency. 2 of colors (warm) which can include a variety of things, 1 of whites (hot w/ a touch of bleach)- OR if I don't have a lot of whites, I still run a hot load of bath towels/kitchen towels, etc. - stuff that needs "disinfecting", 1 of delicates/things that need a gentle cycle and cold water. Usually, I don't have a lot that needs to be washed in cold and save it up...unless one of the girls needs something for church then I'll run a small load. I have occasional bedwetters too so whomevers bedding gets washed that day usually with some diapers. If no wet bedding, then the diapers wait until I absolutely need them and then I'll run them with the hot load without bleach.

All goals. I'm not 100% consistant but it's pretty attainable even if I have an off day or two.

Hope it helps. :-)

As you probably remember, in Grandview, we had a "laundry room". When they were youngish, the kids had to bring their clothes to that room and sort them into whites (light colored clothes), coloreds, jeans, towels etc. Then I did a couple of loads a day....of course, some days there were more. It taught the kids at a young age to sort clothes ....although, neither of my boys do that now. =)
